Symptoms of Depression

Here's a tool for tracking your mood and assessing your need for intervention. http://nwsamaritans.org/forms/Burns_Depression_Checklist.pdf It was developed by Dr. David Burns, author of Feeling Good and proponent of cognitive behavioral therapy.

  1. 1) My profession is teaching English as a Second Language to adults, and I'm always in search of volunteers for conversation practice or other tutoring for my students. Not that you don't have enough service opportunities, but I can assure you that working with adult immigrants is very rewarding, and they'll thank you sincerely after each lesson, which is a tremendous source of warm fuzzies.

    2) If you're tempted to hit the snooze button and crawl back under the covers, consider moving the alarm clock to the other side of the room. =}

    3) If you suspect your visiting teachee is down in the dumps, try asking her to go for a walk with you (you both need one!). Go out for lunch, invite her to dinner, or even take her a meal you know is nourishing. Chocolate (especially dark?) is likely to be well-received. Any other ideas? Is there an uplifting/relaxing musical event in your neighborhood? Would she need you to babysit so she can attend?
